Double Page Spread Third Draft

  • This is the third draft of my double page spread. The feedback I received for my second draft was that I should include a drop capital at the front of the strapline at the top of the page. I added this into the third draft by moving around the text so that a large capital letter could be fitted in. This gives the magazine a more professional look, because drop capitals are used in nearly all magazine double page spreads.
  • The other changes that I made were very minor. This involved editing the size of fonts in order to solve spacing problems. I also added more shade into the background of the page so that it had a more darker look then it had before and was more consistent.

Contents Page Third Draft

After handing in the recent second drafts of my final products to my teacher, I have been given more feedback on how I can improve certain aspects of the products. Here are the changes which I made to my magazine's contents page:

  • The improvements which I made in the third draft were not actually too drastic. One of the initial comments which I received for my second draft were that were that I should've included the title 'editor' underneath the editor's signature. This was to notify the readers that they were reading what the editor of the magazine had said and therefore keep them interested in reading the feature, as they would be interested in hearing what the editor had to say.
  • Another comment which I received was that I should expand the size of my logo in the top right corner of the page. I received praise for my logo due to its appearance and suitability within my particular genre. By expanding its size I have made the page more symmetrical as the logo now looks as though it is inline with the masthead which is to the left of it. This creates a neater, easy on the eye appearance.
  • I was also told that I should include a range of social media logos in the page. I placed it in the space just next to the contents headline, as before this it was just taken up by blank white space. In doing this I have not only blocked this white space but also integrated social media into my magazine making it more media-rich and also easily accessible to readers who frequently use these particular forms of social networking.
  • Another suggested improvement for the page was for me to actually change the dominant image to a collage of images of Sunderland, as it was thought that my image did not portray the city in a good way. However, I decided that I did not want to change the image. This was for several reasons; firstly because I liked the way this image looked on the page. I felt the contrast in the black and white colour scheme up against the frequent use of red and white really made the page have a vibrant and interesting look. Secondly, I would've struggled to find more images to use in the suggested collage as I had already used photos of the iconic Sunderland locations elsewhere in my product, therefore if I'd used them again I would've been using the same material. And finally because I feel this image is suited to my genre. While it may not be the prettiest image of Sunderland, it adds to the stark nature of my magazine and is symbolic of the mood of Sunderland. The purpose of my magazine is not to portray the city of Sunderland as though it is a pretty place where people would want to visit. The purpose is to create a realistic representation about the city which my readers can relate to as they too will be citizens of the city. I feel that this method, despite the fact that it may not promote the city to outsiders, will create a real sense of pride within my fan base about the city and will help them to accept and embrace the city that they live in.

Theory Application

As I am approaching the course's exam, I have began to learn about some of the vital media theory. As part of the exam I am required to apply various pieces of this theory to my magazine. In order to demonstrate my knowledge of theory prior to the exam and also to revise the course content, I have created this presentation to show how certain media theory can be applied to my work.

Double Page Spread Second Draft

2nd Draft:

In the first draft of my double page spread, one of the improvements that were suggested were to change the font for the headline subhead. Originally I used an italic, preset Photoshop however it looked dull, so I changed the font to a downloaded font from Dafont called Bebas Neue. This was better because I feel it is a font that has more character and livens up the page somewhat.

I was also asked to change the font style of my page number so that it wasn't too big and imposing on the bottom of the page. Therefore I changed it to a slightly smaller font with a thin style. I felt this looked neater and easier on the eye.

I was asked to alter my actual written content so that it read more as an article rather than an interview. This involved changing the questions into introductory paragraphs so that it was an easier read and felt more flowing. I also changed the font colour of these paragraphs os that readers would be able to differentiate between interview content and the introduction paragraph. Also in order to contribute to the article style, I added a closing paragraph showing the details of my interviewee Gary Downing.

Contents Page Second Draft

1st Draft:

2nd Draft:

  • To improve my contents page I was asked to add an image to my editor's not. Originally I felt I would leave out an image of the editor as I didn't have enough rohm, however after increasing the size of the box and reducing the size of the font, I had enough room to fit in the image.
  • I was also asked to give each of the contents in my contents list a sub head. I did this by increasing the text size of the sub head and putting it in bold.
  • I was asked to change the main image of my contents page because the one I had originally used of the Stadium of Light related too much to the genre of football where-as I want my magazine to cover both the genre of culture and football, therefore I changed the image to a panoramic style shot of Sunderland's skyline as this relates to both culture and football.

Front Cover Second Draft

1st Draft

2nd Draft:

After handing in the first draft of my magazine's front cover, I received some feedback from my teacher on how I can improve the page. These improvements included;

  • Adding more additional information to the page, in the form of subheads, straplines etc. This information needed also needed to include lots of information which concerned Sunderland in some form. I did add some subheads on the right hand side of my page, detailing some of the Sunderland-related features within the magazine.
  • Another improvement that was required was to rethink the placement of the barcode and essential information, as they seemed to give the page an unprofessional look being placed in the positions they were in. I changed this by resizing the barcode so that it did not take up too much space within the page. I did have the option to remove my barcode and place it on the back of the magazine, however I wanted to keep the barcode on the front cover as I feel it makes my front cover seem more real and believable. I also resized the essential information and placed it just above my barcode so that it too did not take up an unnecessarily large amount of text within the page.
  • I was also asked to resize the dominant image so that there was less blank space at the bottom of the page where the model's neck is. By resizing the image, I have gotten rid of this blank space as well as ensuring the reader's full concentration will be on the main part of the image which is the model's face/background image.
  • Another change which was suggested and that I made was to rethink the font style and size within the page. One of the fonts I had used for the main subhead was a generic, italic Photoshop font, this looked dull and lacked a cutting-edge feel therefore I replaced the font with a laid-over font from Dafont. This looked more visually interesting and gave the page a more vibrant look.

Image Editing

There has been a heavy amount of editing involved in the creation of my product for this coursework. most of it has been done on the program Adobe Photoshop. Here I will show the original images as opposed to what they look like post-editing, giving an explanation as to how I edited the image and why I did it.
